Fighting the Good Fight

I believe what Jennifer Beals said in your interview with her (“Jennifer Beals Takes On Toxins,” September), that we don’t have to accept bad situations just because that’s the way things are.

Her outlook is very healthy and special. Thanks for the reality of her ideas and the truth of her life.

In the story Beals talks about how parenthood has motivated her to speak out about the connection between environmental toxins and poor health.

Allergies on the Road

Thank you for your article on allergens in lodging facilities (“Footloose and Sneeze-Free,” Healthy Traveler, June). I know firsthand how seriously ill one can get from inhaling synthetic fragrances (and other toxic substances) in room deodorizers, dryer sheets and cleaning agents used in motels.

These products can be lethal to infants and the elderly. They may not die in the room but suffer fatal cardiovascular or respiratory events soon thereafter. Even healthy, allergy-free people can suffer immune-system damage without immediate symptoms.

Stale, polluted air cannot be “freshened.” It must be replaced with truly fresh air.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics states on its website (www.safecosmetics.org), “One in every 50 people may suffer immune system damage from fragrance and become sensitized, according to the EU’s Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-food Products. Fragrances are considered to be among the top five known allergens and are known to trigger asthma attacks.”
