Maintaining Weight Loss

In our June story “Keeping It Off,” we learned that losing weight is only half the battle—the other is keeping those pounds from coming back through a combination of healthy eating patterns and physical activity. On our blog at www.energytimes.com we asked readers if they’ve lost weight and how they’ve kept it off; here is one response.

When I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, the doctor put me on a synthetic hormone replacement. I took it for about six months; it had many side effects, especially weight gain that would not decrease. I found a holistic doctor who ordered blood and urine tests and then selected healthy foods and supplements for me according to the test results.

As a result, I lost weight and have kept it off for 11 years now. I am 5'2" and weigh 110 pounds. I jog and lift weights three times per week for about 20 to 30 minutes each.

blog response

As we explained in our story “Slow Motor” (March 2011 Malady Makeover), hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormone to maintain proper metabolism, resulting in a slowdown of many bodily functions. An under-performing thyroid can itself cause weight gain in addition to fatigue, dry skin and hair, constipation, joint pain and brittle nails.
