Do you like to play cards or board games with your friends? You may be doing your brain a favor.

A University of Edinburgh research team administered memory and cognition tests to nearly 1,100 volunteers from the time they were 70 years old until they reached age 79. The participants also answered questions on how often they played games such as bingo, cards or chess.

To isolate the effects of game-playing, the team took the participants’ income, education and physical activity levels into account, as well as their IQs as measured at age 11.

According to results published in the Journals of Gerontology, people who played more games as they aged showed shower declines in mental skills, especially in the areas of memory and thinking speed.
